Energy Group

Community consultations through the Community Action Plan, Local Place Plan and Climate Café discussions have identified community energy as a priority. A local community energy group has been set up in partnership with the Trust and has received funding to explore the potential for a community-owned renewable energy programme tailored to local needs and opportunities. This could include:- energy efficiency and retrofit programmes, battery storage and innovative local energy club models, small-scale hydro generation, solar farm opportunities, community rooftop solar co-operative models, community investment in commercial wind assets.

The objectives are to:-

  • reduce household energy costs and address fuel poverty

  • generate long-term income for community benefit

  • strengthen local climate resilience

  • enable residents to participate directly in the renewable energy transition

The project will include public events and targeted outreach to enable residents, businesses and local organisations to shape the direction of the scheme and identify the solutions that best meet community needs.

By the end of the project the aim is for the community to have a technically robust, financially-modelled and community-endorsed renewable energy scheme, ready to move forward to capital funding and implementation in a second phase.

Alongside developing the scheme, engagement activities will also help raise awareness of existing opportunities for households and businesses to reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiency, ensuring the project delivers immediate as well as long-term benefits.
