Our aim is to create affordable workshop facilities for creative businesses based in Dunkeld

& Birnam, including a community workshop space.

Identified Need:-

Dunkeld & Birnam thrives on having a wealth of creative people, especially musician, and creative events and performance facilities including Birnam Arts. This reputation benefits local businesses and the wider community, but due to popularity, high rents, and A9 expansion local makers and artisans are being forced to run their businesses elsewhere.

We want to address this talent drain, promote and highlight the amazing skills of our local artisans and makers by offering dedicated creative business workshop facilities in the heart of the community.

Site Identified:

Our proposal is to renovate the Derelict Garage and land at the back of North Street Carpark. This is currently owned by Perth & Kinross Council, which the DB&DC Development Trust are applying for a Community Asset Transfer of this site.

This will create and protect a small part of Dunkeld as a community asset for local creative businesses and the wider community to benefit from, which would connect up to the ‘rural path network’, and surrounding ‘National Trust’ conservation area.

The aim would be to renovate the existing stone/brick garage into a community workshop space, which can be hired and used by different groups to run workshops. It will be kitted out with machinery and a tool library which can be hired ( especially if you don’t have access to this this in your workshops).

The surrounding wasteland space which currently has prefab garages on will be re configured to create a courtyard of 5 low impact new build workshops for local creative businesses. These workshops will offer affordable rent directly to local start up and developing creative businesses.

The wider benefits and impact of the artisan village will include:-

  • Regeneration of disused site in the heart of Dunkeld

  • Improving employment / self-employment opportunities for skills jobs in the village

  • Skill share of local creative trades through workshops, mentoring, peer learning

  • Expansion of businesses, and job opportunities for young people including ‘creative apprenticeship’ training

  • Creating sustainable and well insulated low impact buildings with minimal running costs.

  • Connectivity to all access path network as an alternative accessible route around the village
